Webinar overview

As of January 1, 2021, the UK and the EU began operating independently from each other. Some regulations have changed as the UK has established independent regulatory regimes. The existing EU Biocidal Products Regulation (EU BPR) has been copied into GB law and amended to enable it to operate effectively in GB. This means that most aspects of EU BPR will continue in the same way under the new GB Biocidal Products Regulation (GB BPR). The EU REACH Regulation was brought into UK law on 1 January 2021. This is known as UK REACH.

Companies that supply or purchase substances, mixtures, or articles to and from the EU/European Economic Area (EEA) and the UK will need to ensure that they meet the requirements under both the relevant UK and EU statutes.

This webinar will highlight the main differences between EU BPR and GB BPR as well as the things that are unchanged. It also provides guidance on what action you need to take and when you need to do it.

Darren Abrahams - Partner at Steptoe
Darren enables clients throughout the chemicals and life sciences supply chain to get and keep their products on the European Union market. He focuses on defense of products through strategic advice, advocacy before institutions and agencies, and litigation before EU and national courts and tribunals.

He has a wealth of experience with the EU regulation of biocidal products, plant protection products (agrochemicals), REACH, classification, labelling and packaging, GM food and feed, cosmetics, and endocrine disruptors. Darren is recognized Europe-wide for his Environment and Agro/Food practice by Chambers Europe, who quotes clients’ praise for his work: "he is very knowledgeable and experienced in his field - a very good communicator who is responsive and strategically savvy."

Simon Tilling - Partner at Steptoe

Simon Tilling advises clients on UK and EU environmental law, chemicals regulation and product standards, with a wealth of experience covering regulatory compliance and supply chain diligence, investigations, enforcement and criminal defense, regulatory appeals, tribunal hearings, and environmental civil claims.

With a joint honors degree in Chemistry and Law, Simon combines robust scientific analysis with persuasive advocacy to resolve complex and technical environmental issues. In particular, he is experienced in advising on chemicals regulation, such as REACH and biocides, the control of chemicals in the environment, and the life-cycle of products and wastes within the circular economy. Chambers quotes clients as saying "Simon is super – especially at chemicals regulation".

As a UK lawyer with many years of experience in EU chemicals and products regulations, Simon is particularly well placed to help clients navigate access to the newly independent market of Great Britain and to represent industry in its engagement with the UK regulators and institutions, and before the UK courts, tribunals and appeal bodies.
